My life experiences led me to pursuing the human services field. I’m a community youth worker with Youth Mentoring Connection. One of the many tasks I perform with our organization is mentoring the young men and women through problems such as school, peer pressure, life at home, and every day difficulties.
The reason I chose this line of work is because of what I went through as child/teen. Living through the daily pressures of drugs and gangs in the community motivated me to help kids in my neighborhood find alternatives to these bad choices. A local youth center was truly a GOD send that was much needed in our community; it definitely aroused my awareness and views of what was important for me to do with the youth of the next generation. Observing the staff and how they interacted with me and my friends made me feel like I was at home. They guided me into a brighter life, and they helped me realize that I too could become a positive role model to others. Working there gave me my first opportunity to fulfill one of my personal goals in helping the youth with basic life skills. It also allowed to me to apply my natural ability to coach and reinforce discipline, team work, hard work, competition, good physical health, while enjoying different sports.
I began working with Youth Mentoring Connection in 2009 to continue working with our youth. When I’m not working I enjoy playing basketball, watching sporting events, and spending quality time with my loved ones.
