Mentors: Community Volunteers

Mentees: Various South Central Los Angeles Middle Schools

Overview: Middle School Students from South Central Los Angeles are mentored at A Place Called Home Youth Center. Mentors are drawn from the community as well as students who have successfully participated in our various Work Site Mentoring Programs who want to give back by becoming mentors themselves. The sessions are a combination of one-on-one meetings between mentee and mentor, group projects, and Life Skills Workshops conducted by YMC staff.

In addition to the sessions; group outings (bowling, ball games, plays, etc.) are organized by YMC staff for weekends. Finally, mentors spend quality time with their mentees in the community on their own. They take them to museums, invite them to family functions, etc.

A Place Called Home has two middle school mentoring programs per yer, one beginning in fall and one beginning in winter. These are called the In da House Mentoring Programs.

In 2004, the APCH VIP program began. Matching A Place Called Home board members with high school students.

"This is an absolutely first rate professionally and compassionately run program and it's been a real treat to be able to participate in such a positive and fun experience for these kids."
- APCH Mentor

"My mentor is always there for me and I know he cares for me. I care for him too. He's like a second father to me."
- APCH Mentee
