Mentors: Boarding House Mentors and Other Community Volunteers

Mentees: Youth from all YMC mentoring programs as well as others recruited by youth participants

Overview: This extremely popular summer program started in 2003 and has grown quickly. Expert surfers work with mentors and mentees to learn how to surf while encouraging their relationship and building trust.

The youth leave with a sense of accomplishment for mastering a new skill. They make new friends and find the satisfaction in encouraging others and in the encouragement of others. They take what they learn at the surfing prorgam and apply it to the next challenge that comes their way. They are more able to look a daunting task in the face, learn the skills to help them along the way, and finally reach their goal.
