16. Mentee uses offensive language

Scenario:
You have been matched with your mentee(that is in Junior High) for one month. At your sixth session when he/she begins to tell you about his/her week you notice that every other word is very, very foul language. Do you:

    a) Point out the use of language as it happens. Discuss why he uses that language, when it is inappropriate and how it makes both of you feel. Then, come to an understanding about his language that is comfortable for both of you.

    b) Tell your mentee off in a strict voice and demand him/her not to use foul language in front of you.

    c) Relate to your mentee and use the same words. This way your mentee will not only look up to you but will also feel a strong bond between the two of you.

Answer: If you chose the letter a you are correct. See if you and your mentee can come to an agreement not to use the foul language. If you see improvement with the language reward him/her with something for sticking to the agreement you two made. As time progresses compliment the change your mentee is making. Always know that a slip might occur every now and then but do not get discouraged or disappointed. Keep on encouraging your mentee.
