Assistance Available to Mentoring Programs

Youth Mentoring Connection addresses the growing need to provide effective technical assistance to organizations (both public and private) in California seeking to develop, expand, or enhance mentoring programs. Without effective training and technical assistance, mentoring can be an expression of good intentions and not a strategy to solve real problems.

Guided by the State of California's Quality Assurance Standards, the following assistance is available:
  • Program Development: (Models for: Work Site, School Site, Community, Youth Center, School-To-Work, Team, etc.)
  • Mentor/Mentee Recruitment Strategies
  • Mentor/Mentee Orientation, Sign Up and Application Process
  • Mentor & Mentee Screening
  • Matching Strategies
  • Mentor/Mentee Training (curriculum and facilitation)
  • Monitoring Process
  • Support, Recognition and Retention of Mentors & Mentees
  • Proper Closure Procedures
  • Program Evaluation
In addition to the above technical assistance, we support mentoring programs by providing the following:

Program Coordination: We are helping programs all over the Los Angeles area to run effective programs by providing manpower and expert program assistance. We perform a variety of tasks, including acting as liaison between organizations and schools or youth centers, program monitoring, evaluation session coordination, facilitation, guest speakers, etc.

Mentor Tips: Our twice per month e-mail campaign helps mentors learn new ways to deal with their mentee's issues. The Tips also include "Things to do in LA": activities for mentors to take their mentees to.

Life Skills Workshops: We have found that mentor programs that include "Life Skills Workshops" for their mentees to experience with their mentors create higher levels of success in changing kid's lives.

Troubleshooting: Whether it's mentees with problems that mentors don't know how to deal with, or just program logistical issues, we've probably already experienced and dealt with it.

Mentor/Mentee Support: In addition to our "Mentor Tips" campaign, we support mentor/mentee relationships by facilitating mentor rap sessions, mentee rap sessions, program review, and personal attention - mentors and mentees can call, write or e-mail their questions/issues to our experts.
